Migraine and Headache Awareness Month

Every June, communities across the country light up purple, declare proclamations, and bring visibility to the millions affected by migraine and headache disorders.

What is Migraine and Headache Awareness Month?

Migraine and Headache Awareness Month (MHAM) takes place every June. Around the country, advocates secure proclamations from governors and mayors, light buildings purple, run educational programs, and use the month to push for better recognition of headache disorders. The color purple has long been associated with the headache and migraine advocacy community.

Proclamations and purple landmarks

Each year, governors, mayors, and city councils pass official proclamations recognizing MHAM. Buildings, bridges, and landmarks across the country light up purple. Below is a state-by-state list of 2026 proclamations and lit landmarks.

Make Art, Make Headache Visible.

Make Art, Make Headache Visible is an annual art competition that invites young people ages 18 and under to use art and writing to make headache disorders visible. Submissions are accepted in any medium and are judged by a panel of artists, advocates, and clinicians. Winners are featured during MHAM and at events throughout the year.

The MHAM toolkit gives advocates everything needed to declare a proclamation in their state, light a building purple in their community, run a local awareness event, and share on social. It is free and updated each year.
